Hold Option.
Speak. Release.
A ghost lives in the menu bar and turns speech into clean text at the cursor. Apple on-device by default. Deepgram or Gemini when the words matter more than the wait.
A thumb, not a settings panel.
No window to open, no dock icon to find. The whole interaction is one key and one release.
Hold ⌥
Right Option anywhere on the Mac. A quick tap switches to hands-free for longer thoughts.
Say the thing
A small HUD follows the voice. Pauses are fine. Mid-sentence corrections are fine.
Release
Punctuated text lands at the cursor and waits on the clipboard, in case the cursor moved.
Small on purpose.
Every app that takes text
Slack, Mail, VS Code, Notes, Terminal, a browser form. Dictation follows the cursor, not the app.
On-device by default
Apple's recogniser runs on the Neural Engine. Audio stays on the Mac unless a cloud key is added on purpose.
Yours, not rented
A$59 once. No account, no telemetry, no monthly bill. Keys live in the macOS Keychain, never on a server.
Pick the trade-off.
Offline privacy, cloud accuracy, or a polish pass on the prose. Switch any time from the menu.
Apple on-device
The default. Runs on the Neural Engine, works on a plane, sends nothing anywhere. Needs on-device recognition for the selected language.
Free · offlineDeepgram Nova-3
Streaming cloud recognition with a personal key. Words appear while speaking, which makes long takes feel shorter.
Own keyGemini polish
An optional pass that turns rambling into tidy prose, with a custom vocabulary for names, brands and slang.

Before the download.
Why a DMG instead of the Mac App Store?
The App Store sandbox does not allow watching a global key or pasting into another app, which is the whole point of TalkType. The direct build is notarized by Apple and opens without warnings — it just keeps the powers the sandbox removes.
Where does the audio go?
Nowhere by default. Apple's on-device recogniser keeps it on the Mac. Cloud engines only run when a Deepgram or Gemini key is added, and then audio goes straight from the Mac to that provider — never through a TalkType server, because there is no TalkType server.
What happens after payment?
Square sends a receipt, and the thank-you page holds the download plus install steps. The same DMG lives at talktype.app/downloads/TalkType.dmg, so a lost copy is never a lost purchase.
Does it work in password fields?
No, by design. macOS refuses synthetic keystrokes in secured fields, and TalkType does not try to work around that. Everything else that accepts text accepts dictation.
Which Macs are supported?
macOS 13 Ventura or newer, Apple Silicon or Intel. The DMG carries one universal binary.
